愛情があって、犬に翻弄されるおひとよしのハバードおばあさんのやりとりが愉快なお話です。

マザーグースの一節です。イギリスの政治家の妻が、夫が望む離婚をしようと教会に行くが、できなかったというすれちがいの話がもとになった説が有力です。

boneとnone、breadとdead、coffinとlaughingと、一つ一つが韻を踏んで作られています。ぜひ声に出して英語のリズム感を楽しんでください。

And so the poor dog had none.

犬のためにパン屋にいった
しかし、戻ってみると
犬が死んでいた

She went to the baker's
To buy him some bread

The poor dog was dead.

棺を買おうと葬儀屋にいった
しかし戻ると、犬は笑っていた

She went to the undertaker's
To buy him a coffin
But when she came back
The poor dog was laughing.

お皿に食べ物を入れてやろうとした
しかし戻ると、犬はパイプをふかしていた

She took a clean dish

He was smoking a pipe.

ビールを取りにいったが
しかし戻ると、犬はイスに座っていた。

夫人(娘)は膝を曲げてきどっておじぎをした

犬は「ワンワン」
